Citation | Distinguished for his discovery of the cell cycle regulators Maturation Promoting Factor (MPF) and Cytostatic Factor (CSF) and for the development of the cell-free system which allowed their full characterization. After he discovered MPF, Masui developed a crucial and versatile cell-free system, together with his student Lohka. The system, which is derived from Xenopus eggs, assembles nuclear envelopes in vitro and then undergoes cyclic mitotic events. Many other laboratories have exploited this system to study cell cycle control. Masui's former student Lohka exploited it to purify MPF and to show by collaborations that MPF consists of cyclin and the cdc2 gene product.
