Title | Stirling, William James: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1993 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Professor Stirling is one of the world's leading phenomenological particle physicists whose work has significantly extended the analysis and understanding of high energy physics phenomena. His contributions have been important in establishing the validity of QCD, the gauge theory description of the strong interactions, and in exploring possible extensions of the Standard Model of the strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions. With others he has pioneered the analysis of multiparticle hard scattering processes. He has developed a systematic study of such processes using new calculational techniques which has been adopted as the standard worldwide. He has made significant contributions to Higgs boson phenomenology, identifying the optimum channels by which the new accelerators can approach the 1 TeV Standard Model Higgs discovery limit. His work determining parton distributions with high precision has also been of great significance in the study of QCD processes and has been adopted for both the CERN and DESY experimental analysis programmes. |
