Richard Thomas is distinguished for his work in algebraic geometry, and connections with mathematical physics. In his early work he developed an enumerative theory for sheaves over Calabi-Yau threefolds, which has grown into a huge topic, having deep connections with string theory. Thomas has continued to be a world leader in this development. A theme running through much of Thomas' work is the use of derived categories. In a seminal paper, he and Seidel constructed "twists" on derived categories which are fundamental in mirror symmetry. He has also made important contributions to Geometric Invariant Theory and the Hodge conjecture.
