Professor Bishop has made seminal contributions to methods for building probabilistic models with latent variables, and in doing so has generalised and extended some classical methods of statistics. Also for his leadership in industry, leading to advances in systems for modelling users of online computer systems and predicting their behaviour. Professor Bishop is also distinguished for his work in engaging the public with advances in science.
