Date | 9 May 2018 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Neil Brockdorff as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Neil Brockdorff identified and characterised the master regulator of X chromosome inactivation, Xist. He demonstrated that Xist is a non-protein coding RNA that localises to the nucleus, the first noncoding regulatory RNA to be discovered. He provided first direct evidence that Xist is necessary for X inactivation and in a series of studies contributed key insights both into the mechanism by which the Xist RNA is regulated during early development, and into mechanisms by which Xist RNA triggers chromosome wide transcriptional silencing. He has thereby defined a key novel paradigm for epigenetic genome regulation in differentiation, development, inheritance and disease. |
