He has developed new catalysts now widely used in pharmaceutical chemistry. His experimental and theoretical contributions to the basic understanding of carbon-hydrogen bond activation and related transition-metal hydrogen systems have provided a platform for the development of new areas of the catalytic reactivity of hydrocarbons and related organic chemistry. He has been a leader in his research areas for over 50 years and has received worldwide recognition as shown by the exceptional number of citations of his published papers.
