Citation | Jeffrey Friedman is nominated for the discovery of leptin, a hormone that regulates food intake, energy expenditure and body weight. The identification of leptin has uncovered a new endocrine system that regulates food intake and body weight in human and links changes in nutrition to adaptive responses in other physiologic systems. His research has helped to establish a conceptual framework for studying the pathogenesis of obesity and led to a new treatment for several human conditions including lipodystrophy and hypothalamic amenorrhea. |
