Citation | Charles Bangham is distinguished for his work on the virology and immunology of infection with the human T cell leukaemia virus, HTLV-1. He discovered the virological synapse: the mechanism by which viruses including HTLV-1, HIV and murine leukaemia virus are transmitted from cell-to-cell. This discovery started a new field in virology. Bangham also discovered HTLV-1’s capacity to preferentially infect virus-specific T-cells and thereby induce T-cell fratricide; and the central importance of T-cell quality, rather than quantity, in determining the position of the virus-host balance. Bangham’s research provides the most complete picture of a persistent virus infection in the human. |
