Title | Nicholls, David George: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 28 March 2019 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of David Nicholls as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | David Nicholls is distinguished for identifying roles of mitochondria in cellular physiology and pathology. He discovered uncoupling protein one in brown adipose tissue and elucidated its role in heat production. He quantified proton flux, potential and conductance linking electron transport to ATP synthesis, in Ca2+ transport in neurons in models of excitotoxicity, and in insulin secretion, leading to an understanding of presynaptic regulation of transmitter glutamate release from nerve terminals, and metabolic control of plasma membrane potential oscillations driving insulin secretion from ß-cells. His rigorous and elegant application of chemiosmosis to explain mechanisms of physiological and pathological phenomena is unsurpassed. |
