Title | Reis e Sousa, Caetano: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 28 March 2019 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Caetano Reis e Sousa as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Caetano Reis e Sousa is distinguished for his contributions to our understanding of the mechanisms by which the immune system detects pathogen invasion, cancer and tissue damage. His key discoveries shed light on the cellular and molecular processes by which viruses, fungi and tumours trigger immune responses. These include his characterisation of mechanisms used to discriminate between viral and self RNA; his definition of a tyrosine kinase signalling pathway mediating microbial recognition; his revelation that cytoskeletal exposure is a sign of cell damage that impacts on immunity. His work has also helped unravel the complexity of the dendritic cell system in host defence from cancer and infection. Reis e Sousa's discoveries and conceptual advances have led to a clearer understanding of the fundamental principles underlying immune function. |
