Title | Sazanov, Leonid Alexeevich: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 28 March 2019 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Leonid Sazanov as a Fellow of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Fellow and citing the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Leonid Sazanov is distinguished for advancing understanding of the structure and mechanism of the respiratory enzyme NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase, (complex I). His structure of the bacterial complex is the most complex membrane bound structure yet described at atomic resolution. It corresponds to the catalytic core of the mitochondrial enzyme, and subsequent efforts by him and others on structures of mitochondrial complexes I depend on his work. Sazanov's findings have suggested an unpredicted and novel mechanism of coupling of redox energy to transmembrane proton gradients, and provide the basis for current mechanistic investigations. His efforts have opened the door for understanding the bases of a range of human diseases arising from mutations in complex I. |
