Citation | Ben Berks has discovered two bacterial exporters that translocate folded proteins across membranes. He identified, in 1996, three integral membrane proteins of the Tat transport system, elucidated their molecular structures and operation as a transporter. Tat is now known to be widely distributed in Bacteria, Archaea, chloroplasts, and mitochondria. Recently, Berks identified the translocon of the Type 9 Secretion System (T9SS) revealing a 36-strand transmembrane -barrel operating by alternating access to each end of the conducting channel. Berks has also made significant contributions to the understanding of bacterial enzymes that metabolise inorganic nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus species. |
