| Citation | Kevin Brindle is distinguished internationally for his development of magnetic resonance techniques for investigating the biochemistry of cells and tissues in vivo. This included the first studies with 1H NMR, methods for studying the kinetic and structural properties of enzymes in vivo, identification of the origin of the tumour lipid signal, some of the first cell tracking studies in vivo that led subsequently to two new powerful gene reporter constructs, the first targeted MRI agent for detecting cell death, the first dynamic contrast agent enhanced studies with a tumour anti-vascular drug. He pioneered hyperpolarized 13C MRI for studying tumour metabolism and its application for detecting disease and treatment response. Under his leadership, this exciting technique has now reached clinical trials. |
