The last decade in astronomy has been revolutionised through digital sky surveys and rapid data processing. Smartt is one of the formative, global pioneers of this new field, making a number of major discoveries. He invented a way to identify stars before explosion, found the most luminous supernovae in the Universe and played a leading role in the discovery and physical understanding of the first electromagnetic counterpart to a gravitational wave source. |
