Citation | Richard Thompson is a marine ecologist whose multidisciplinary research on plastic accumulation in the environment has been the catalyst for a major new field of scientific enquiry. His work on the sources, pathways and effects of microplastics in the oceans, as well as potential interventions to reduce their accumulation, has contributed directly to UK and international legislation. His 2004 Science article, Lost at Sea: Where Is All the Plastic?, was the first paper to use the term microplastics and demonstrated a significant increase in the environmental accumulation of microscopic fragments and fibres of common polymers over a 40-year period. |
