CitationSpeech and language processing has made remarkable progress over the last few decades by moving to completely data-driven statistical models. Steve Young has pioneered this approach, first in speech recognition and then more broadly in conversational agents. The speech recognisers he developed with colleagues dominated the international evaluations run by the US for over a decade and his casting of conversation as a reinforcement learning problem has laid the foundation for modern approaches to spoken dialogue optimisation. His research results underpin many commercial products and the three companies he has founded have been acquired respectively by Microsoft, Google and Apple.
