TitleCollins, Francis: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date14 April 2020
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Francis Collins as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Foreign Member and citation giving the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationAs NIH Director, Dr. Collins has demonstrated a remarkable ability to explain the significance of biomedical breakthroughs in a way that the public can readily comprehend. As a human genetics researcher for nearly four decades, Dr. Collins has made numerous seminal contributions by elucidating the genetic bases of rare and common diseases. Beyond his own research contributions, his leadership skills were greatly responsible for the extraordinary success of the international Human Genome Project (HGP). He has consistently challenged us to consider the important moral and ethical decisions that society must make in advancing genomics and other transformative disciplines. He brings hope to patients and their loved ones (sometimes in song), and he ignites the imaginations of young students leading them to envision their own futures in science and medicine.
