TitleFriis, Else Marie: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date14 April 2020
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Else Friis as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Foreign Member and citation giving the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationThe remarkable discovery of exquisitely well-preserved ancient flowers by Professor Friis, and her careful research integrating palaeontological information with data from living plants, have revolutionized knowledge of the structural and systematic diversity of early angiosperms through the first 70 million years of their evolutionary history. Her work provides the primary means of calibrating molecular clock studies of deep divergences in flowering plant evolution and has documented broad consistency between palaeontological patterns and results from modern phylogenetic studies. She also pioneered the application of high-resolution synchrotron x-ray microtomography to fossil plants and has made fundamental discoveries about non-angiosperm seed plants.
