TitleYonath, Ada E: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date14 April 2020
DescriptionCertificate endorsing election of Ada Yonath as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society, including personal details of the elected Foreign Member and citation giving the reasons for election and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton.
CitationAda Yonath pioneered the crystallographic study of ribosomes, the universal molecular assemblies through which the genetic code is translated into proteins. Her work resulted in the determination of high-resolution structures of bacterial ribosomes and in major advances in our understanding of ribosomal function and of the modes of action and selectivity of ribosome-targeting antibiotics. It provides a basis for the design of more effective antibiotics with reduced resistance and greater efficacy. Yonath has received many prestigious awards including Honorary Doctorates from Oxford and Cambridge, Foreign Membership of the US National Academy of Sciences, and the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
