Citation | Graham Burton is a reproductive physiologist whose research has transformed understanding of human early pregnancy. Most notably, he has demonstrated that establishment of the placenta and the critical phase of embryogenesis take place in a protective low-oxygen environment supported by secretions from the uterine glands, histotrophic nutrition. Furthermore, he has shown how the placenta stimulates its own development through a feedforward signalling dialogue between the trophoblast and the glands, promoting release of growth factors and nutrients. He identified how failure to transition to haemotrophic exchange at 10-12 weeks of pregnancy leads to a spectrum of complications from miscarriage to pre-eclampsia. |
