Citation | Robin Franklin has provided major and pioneering advances in our understanding of CNS progenitor cells and their role in remyelination, which are leading to clinical treatments for demyelinating diseases. Using novel techniques, he has defined the phenotypic stages of remyelination, identified crucial signalling pathways involved, established a beneficial role of the innate immune system in remyelination, explained how ageing changes CNS progenitor function and decreases remyelination efficiency (and how this might be reversed), and defined metabolic manipulations that can promote remyelination. Together his work provides an outstanding illustration of how fundamental biology can lead to translational advances in neurological diseases. |
