Citation | Eileen Furlong brought genomics to developmental biology. She developed methodologies to examine how the whole genome and its 3D organization affect developmental decisions. This allowed her to redefine the concept of enhancers, establish their relationship to chromatin modification and identify the signature of genes poised for activation. She went on to identify key characteristics of enhancers that contribute to the robustness of gene expression, thus providing a molecular explanation for the classical concept of canalization proposed by Waddington in the 1940’s. Eileen is well on the way to develop models of gene expression to predict developmental trajectories from genome sequence. |
