Title | Robson, Richard: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 21 April 2022 |
Description | Certificate endorsing election of Richard Robson as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Includes personal details of the elected Fellow, citation giving the reasons for election, and names of proposers. Signed by the Executive Director of the Royal Society, Julie Maxton. |
Citation | Robson is distinguished as the founder of the prolific field now known as metal organic frameworks (MOFs). On the basis of demonstrative, trailblazing experiments in the late 80’s and early 90’s he proposed that, given the boundless range of connecting ligands that could realistically be constructed and given the rich geometrical and electronic diversity of metallic elements, coordination polymers could afford an essentially limitless range of solids with predetermined structures. Legions of researchers have subsequently generated and studied thousands of coordination polymers (some under the pseudonym MOFs). Such tailor-made structures promise useful applications, providing controllable, tunable properties in areas such as gas sorption, heterogeneous catalysis and cooperative electronic interactions. |
