Description | Copy letter from American Red Cross; written from 10 Railway Street, Briaatree, Essex 'I am a recently released prisoner of war. While in Gottingham I met the family Pohl. They were very kind to me and my first hours of freedom were made pleasant indeed by all whom I met in Heer Pohl's home. As I was coming back to England before going home to South Africa, I was asked to bring you a message. Heer Pohl and family were in very good health and spirits. They entertained me royally in their charming home. Despite the change of fortunes I believe they were not greatly worried and looked hopefully to the future. Gottingham was fortunately spared any destruction. Because of the large numbers of German wounded the town was declared open and no incident of any sort took place. Heer Pohl wished me to tell you that his only son had fallen in the last days. ' |
