Description | Written from the Department of Natural Philosophy, The University, Drummond Street, Edinburgh ' We are asked by other departments, doing war work for the Government, to help them with mathematical problems. We are very willing to do so, but we are hampered by the prescriptions about secrecy and employment of refugees in such work. There is particularly the case of Professor Furth from Prague who is my guest in the department and has a stipend from the Soc. of. the Protection etc. He is an expert in statistical mechanics and has just studied a problem in which our physiological department is strongly intetrested. He could give deciding assistance. But they never tell us what the real problem is about, and I am reluctant to allow participation of Furth (or other refugees) at such work as long as the regulations are restricting war work to british born people. I think these restrictions could be modified without danger in such a way that a man of Furth's standard could be used as expert. He, and many others, are keen to participate at the destruction of the Nazis. I hope you are in the position to put this question before the proper authorities. ' |
