| Description | Copy of letter, copied as part of the correspondence project led by Colonel John Herschel FRS following the death of his father. Would not object if the [the Royal Astronomical Society] council resolved to give J. C. Adams a medal, but the wording must be carefully considered, especially regarding the word 'discovery.' Presents a 'string of resolutions,' on how to deal with Adams and other contenders in the discovery of Neptune. Leave the question of priority for posterity. If the council sets up Adams as a competitor to U. J. J. Leverrier, John Frederick William Herschel will reserve to himself 'the privilege of protest.' |
