TitleLetter from Thomas Longman, London, to Sir J H [John Frederick William] Herschel
CreatorLongman; Thomas (1804-1879); British publisher
Date15 November 1865
DescriptionHe thanks Herschel for the liberal attitude he has shown with reference to the translation of 'The Iliad' in English hexameters. If it were a small undertaking, no failure would deter Longmans from the venture, but reluctantly they cannot proceed. Further consideration has not led to any alteration in the public taste. Should Herschel wish to publish at his own expense, Longman would have pleasure in publishing it for him, and would promote its success.
