Title | Letter from J [John] Herschel, Brompton Barracks, [Chatham], to 'Dear Papa' [John Frederick William Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer |
Date | 24 August 1857 |
Description | He was a fool to trouble his father, but he was anxious to get a reply. The letter has delighted him and put him at ease on several points. He is trying to make out clear tables of weights and measures, noting the amount of statistics in the 'Annuaire' he is using. He comments on the record-keeping of births, deaths and marriages in France and asks his father to imagine the same in counties of England, Scotland and Ireland [making derogatory comments on the latter]. He need not ask Maria to copy out any of Sir Charles Napier's 'Memoirs', since he is reading it himself. The book is interesting, not as amusing as his 'Indian Misgovernment', but Napier seems to have cause for his bitterness. John will not go to Cambridge yet, but will wait until it suits Alick [Alexander Stewart Herschel]. |
