| Description | He is settled at last and is beginning to know his duties. He sends a blank report sheet of the work done by the officer on duty for the day [HSF/2/1/3]. These are not pleasant and he gives the example of inspecting dinners and breakfasts and asking if there are complaints. There are seven or eight hundred men in his department of barracks, Royal Engineers and East India Company, in sixty rooms. The hospitals and cooking houses have to be visited, as are the sentries. He has been on the sick list for two days with a 'recurrance of that peculiar feeling I had one night at home lately and which you considered a night-mare'. He has consulted the doctor. He describes the officers' mess and mess dress. |
