Title | Letter from J [John] Herschel, Bangalore [Bengaluru], to 'Dear Pater' [Sir John Frederick William Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer |
Date | 10 May 1869 |
Description | He hopes that Mr [William] Huggins will not mind him sending an enclosure [not present] to his father first, as he cannot write the same thing over. Mary [Mary Cornwallis Herschel] copies things into a book in case of accident, but she is far from well. Esther has been laid up with fever and he is not well himself. He asks why all diaphragms of less than 1 1/2 inches diameter over a 5-inch object glass produce distortions. He also asks why 'metrists' will do about the foot-pound which is becoming an essential unit.
