Title | Letter from John Herschel, Bassim, to [Mary Cornwallis Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer |
Date | 1 April 1872 |
Description | He has Mary's two letters postmarked 26th and 27th. He will be at Badgaon on 6 April but cannot say for how long. An inexperienced hand has gone ahead to choose stations and Herschel will plan his observations depending upon whether this hand has done well, moderately, or badly. He must take the weather into account too, but he is not likely to stay beyond 20 April and should therefore be at Bangalore by 25 April. He accepts her proposal to return to Bangalore. Herschel would rather go to rooms in a club than to their previous house, supposing it empty. Mary will have the burden of travel and many arrangements if she does not stay in Ootacamund. He gives and account of a slight break in the heat. He has written to Mr Porter, if vaguely, and Mary may wish to write to him directly to ask if the house is empty or not. He describes his final days at Hingalee, playing whist and billiards, and the harmony and good will of the community there. He refers to the frequency of swearing, drinking and gambling. He notes the importance of their securing a well-recommended cook. |
