William might almost make the 9 June steamer but could not be quite certain. He has promised parting visits to Grey and McNiele, so he will stick with 23 June. His father's letter says little about Lascells [William Lassell?] and if there is anything to say about Alick [Alexander Stewart Herschel] coming out there, it should be sent to Malta. He is thinking of stopping to see the canal cutting at Suez, and again on his return journey 'when it's abandoned'. He will call for letters at the Cairo Post Restante if Alick could come that far. He is glad that he went away from Calcutta and put off coming home, although Johnny [John Herschel] is feeling lonely at Mussouri and was inclining towards matrimony in the person of Miss Mackinnon, 'a good sensible girl of a family of Interlopers, Pioneers, Settlers or whatever...'. He gives additional details of the Mackinnon brewing family and Miss Mackinnon. William concludes by describing how much he misses home. |
