CreatorHerschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge
Herschel; Anne Emma (née Hardcastle) (1836-1873); British
Date22 January 1867
DescriptionWilliam and Emma have had an exciting idea. William has six months' leave during the hot weather is next year, but before then he is entitled to three months' leave at full pay. He had intended to take Emma to see the Himalayas, but now wonders if he should bring Emma home in October instead. He is concerned about their baby, and if it would be worth the risks involved. He has written to Johnny [John Herschel] about it and the possibility of them coming out together in December or January, although he thinks this might not be possible. He writes quickly, as he expects the Famine Commissioners tomorrow, and he lists other interruptions. In a postscript, Emma Herschel asks Margaret what she thinks of the scheme, and requests that the letter is forwarded to her mother.
