TitleLetter from William James Herschel, Kishenganj Dak bungalow, Darjeeling Road, and Darjeeling, to 'Dear Bella' [Isabella Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge
Date8-14 May 1872
DescriptionThey are halfway to the foot of the hills. William gives a sketch map to illustrate the journey, writing that he picked up his family at Hooghly, and describing their onward travels. [From 14 May] Continuing the description of scenery and weather en route to Darjeeling and getting accommodation at Mr Houghton's lodgings. William is acquiring strength to walk a good deal, and he gives family news, with extended descriptions of the children's activities. He comments on Emma's health. They all escaped the dengue fever, and William describes the disease, which is striking everyone with impartiality; the doctor thinks that half the population has suffered. William hopes to be well enough to return to work in thirty days, describing his physical state. He concludes by writing that he is glad that Alick's [Alexander Stewart Herschel's] classes are going well, and asks that the letter is forwarded to New Lodge.
