TitleLetter from William James Herschel, Dacca Steamer, to 'Dearest Bella' [Isabella Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge
Date7 July 1872
DescriptionThey have had pleasure reading her letter and he is writing on board the steamer to Dacca [Dhaka]. He contrast their current journey with former ones by palki, but Dacca is becoming 'the closely linked capital of Eastern Bengal'. He reassures Bella that he has recovered from feverishness, and his liver is improving. His poor handwriting is caused by the loading of cotton bundles and crates on the light iron deck. He gives family news, including of the children. He notes a visit to Bellindur [?] where their host [Campbell?] was recovering from dengue fever. William had several talks with him and feels quite at ease working under him. He comments on the Church in Scotland and readjustment of its revenues. He discusses an article on oceanic circulation, a tribute to Sir Henry Holland and he has skimmed Sir Charles Bell. He is anxious for news and refers to cotttage improvements which he discussed with his mother.
