TitleLetter from William James Herschel, Headlands, to 'Dearest Mother' [Margaret Brodie Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge
Date30 January 1873
DescriptionHe has been thinking of his mother's suggestion of going to Paris with Bella, but he must give it up. With her generosity and that of the people at New Lodge their income and expenditure are just balancing. He wonders whether it will be possible to visit London and notes that he has not yet got the measure of English costs. He ought not to have taken the enclosure away with him; he consulted Morland about it and it was no use asking the valuer for details. The post continues but they have no skating yet. Mr Beaufort, the postmaster of Manchester was with them yesterday, and says he is linking the wire between Manchester and Birmingham; William will try to see this tomorrow. He has sounded Alex [Alexander Herschel] about coming for a visit. He concludes with a note about his volume of Schiller.
