Description | The hot weather has arrived and he describes this at length, with its effects upon inhabitants, including their sleep and drinking. William endeavours to reduce the amount of liquid he takes to an average cold weather quantity. He cannot help thinking about his health. He likes the station, compared to the one at Maldah [Malda], where he was shy to attempt things that might demonstrate independence from the magistrate. He was flattered to hear that the local people of Maldah had applied for William's reappointment, as he was liked there: 'it is possible the people of the town may have given me credit for what I am ambitious of being, a friend of the natives'. Dislike on the part of Europeans must be owing to pride and disdain, he believes. He discusses the relationship between Europeans and Indians. |
