William initially thought a mastership in the school was being offered, but 'Alick knows...as well as I do why that would never do'. Provided Pritchard does not change his mind and make a hobby of it, it will suit Alick, but William is concerned that £80 a year would not be adequate for 'tastes so well regulated'. William has offered him £100 per year and does not think Alick will refuse, although William may not be able to continue if he marries, but there is no prospect of that yet. It is fortunate that he is leaving Arrah, since it is being 'stormed by crinolines this year'. He hopes for better news of Louisa and Fenella.
