Title | Letter from William James Herschel, Kishnaghur, to Lady [Margaret Brodie] Herschel, Collingwood, Hawkhurst, Kent |
Creator | Herschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge |
Date | 7 March 1860 |
Description | He is now well established, although the state of the district is unsatisfactory. The hostility between planter and ryotts is strong, with the ryotts taking the law into their own hands. A government order has been misinterpreted to mean that all indigo planting must stop. William is looked upon as a friend of the ryotts and is viewed with suspicion by the planters. He is obliged to check the ryotts and support the planters for the time being. He is inclined to think there will be a row and the planters will feel a sting. The station is pretty and William enjoys the work and collector duties. In a postscript he notes that he is sending a box via the Cape containing 'a native cannon ball which I picked up at the foot of the Residency tower at Lucknow', together with a shattered stone step from Cawnpore [Kanpur] barracks. |
