CreatorStewart; Alexander (1764-1821); British Presbyterian minister and Gaelic scholar
RecipientMcOmie; John (fl.1790s); British schoolmaster
Date19 February 1796
DescriptionAlexander summarises the plan for their vocabulary, or dictionary, including giving primary meanings, references to uses of words in print, and its use by students. The roots of Scottish words from Irish Gaelic should also be covered, citing the works to be used as sources. He intends to transmit material to 'those gentlemen who may be pleased to favour me with their correspondence' on matters to do with the dictionary. Advice on differences in meaning and pronunciation of Gaelic words across Scotland would be useful.
