| Description | Nye was appointed a visiting professor in Glaciology at the Institute for the Autumn term in 1959-60, commencing on 1 October 1959. The file includes extensive correspondence between Nye and Robert P Sharp, chairman of the Division of Geological Sciences at the Institute. This includes early discussions about a possible position in 1958, as well as more firm arrangements for the visiting professorship being sorted out in 1959. There is also correspondence from Nye seeking possible grant funding to support the trip from the Royal Society and the Astor Foundation.
Some of the correspondence covers the period when Nye was in the US from September 1959, and includes some correspondence regarding glaciology research visits during this time. Nye returned to Bristol in January 1960 and the file includes a summary report of the trip written by Nye, as well as some later correspondence with Sharp from 1961 concerning Glaciology matters at the Institute. |
