Citation | Gunn, James Andrew (Oxford). Professor of Pharmacology, University of Oxford. Director of nuffield Institute for medical Research, Oxford University. Researches have covered a wide field of pharmacology and physiology; e.g., pharmacological action of the harmine alkaloids and numerous new artificial derivatives; also of compounds related to adrenaline, with special reference to constitution and action. Contributed to the pharmacology of yohimbine, arsenic, histamine, snake venom. First investigated surviving time of intestine, etc., at low temperatures, rhythmic contractions of plexus-free intestinal muscle, movements of the 'muscularis mucosae', appendix (including human) and caecum, contraction of isolated veins with their sympathetic innervation. Investigated the sympathetic innervation of the uterus of the rat and guinea-pig, of the vagina in animals, and of the action of certain drugs on the excised human uterus. Did pioneer work on massage of the heart and resuscitation, on tissue immunity and on the mechanism of agglutination of red blood corpuscles. List of papers appended. |
