Citation | MacLean, Hugh (London). M.D., D.Sc., Physiologist and Physician. Distinguished for work on phospholopins; regulation of gastric acidity; trench nephritis and kidney - function generally. Was first to obtain pure lecithin and show that lipins hitherto described were mixtures of lecithin and cephalin with a nitrogenous impurity. Showed secretion of NaC1 by stomach occurred parallel to pepsin but that HC1 was regulated by acidity of gastric contents. Introduced alkali-treatment of gastric ulcer in Britain; this now employed and much surgical intervention avoided. In course of investigation into trench - nephritis, devised new test for renal efficiency which has advanced prognosis and treatment of nephritic diseases. List of 23 scientific papers and 4 books appended. |
