Formerly member of Bacteriological Staff, Lister Institut. Plant Pathologist since 1921, and distinguished as an authority on plant viruses. Has made important studies on growth rate of fungal hyphae and on course of disinfection of botrytris spores by phenol, the latter a fundamental contribution to the general theory of disinfection. Has organised an active deprtment for plant virus studies and has himself investigated the nature of cell-inclusions, the concomitant bacteria in virus diseases and the size of viruses. President, Association of Applied Biologists. In pre-war period, made important contributions to immunology, having shown how the antitoxin-concentration in the blood at any time depends on route of introduction and how output and time of appearance of antibody depend on dose of antigen. Thoroughness, technical accuracy and critical acumen distinguish his work. |
