Citation | Synge, John Lighton (Toronto). Sc.D. (Dublin), formerly Fellow of Trinity College, Dublin. Professor of Applied Mathematics in the University of Toronto. Author of 44 mathematical papers. His memoirs on the Geometry of Dynamics form a homogenous individual contribution displaying a remarkable combination of dynamical knowledge, mastery of tensor calculus, and geometrical intuition. Has made considerable contributions to Riemannian and more general geometries, and to the theory of Relativity, especially in placing the energy tensor on a statistical basis and in the generalisation of Newton's Third Law. His work on Dental Mechanics (Phil. Trans. 1936) is unique, and in Hydrodynamics he has contributed to the study of stability by consideration of vorticity. |
