Demonstrated a) effects on pulmnary blood-volume of changes in intrathoracic pressure and circulation rate ; b) interdependence of peripheral resistance, capacity, endocardiac pressures and cardiac output ; c) functional anastomosis between bronchial and pulmonary vascular beds ; d) dependence of bronchomotor and pulmonary vasomotor responses on functional integrity of bronchial vascular system. Was the first to introduce (independently with Forbes) thermionic valves to amplify action currents. Devised new methods for measuring interrelated factors in mammalian circulation. His researches on the bronchial vascular system have opened up a new aetiological possibility with regard to asthma. Distinguished for his knowledge of the pulmonary and cardiovascular systems.
