Entered Kew (1904) as Student-Gardener, and, after acting as temporary Assistant (1905-07), became Assistant for India (1907-09), Tropical Africa (1909-15), India (1915-19). Botanist (1919), Keeper of Museums (1936), Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Has travelled on botanical expeditions to Southern and Northern Rhodesia [Zimbabwe and Zambia] (with General Smuts), and in the Karoo, on the invitation of the botanical aauthorities of South Africa. Is the author of many papers in the 'Kew Bulletin', and is responsible for a number of natural families in the 'Flora Capensis' and 'Fora of Tropical Africa'. Author of 'The Flora of West Tropical Africa', Vol. 1, Parts I and II (pp. 1-523), and Vol II, Part I and Part II (pp. 1-651). Has original vews on the affinities of the flowering plants, which have attracted much attention, as they form a valuable contribution to our conceptions of the inter-relationshipa of the Angiosperms. His views are ably set out and copiously illustrated from his own pen in his two volumes, 'Families of Flowering Plants', Vol I, 'Dicotyledons' (1926), pp 1-312, and Vol. II, 'Monocotyledons' (1934), pp. 1-229. |
