Citation | Sutton, Leslie Ernest (Oxford). Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford. Distinguished for his work on molecular structure from the point of view of (a) dipole moments and (b) electron diffraction. Has determined numerous valency angles: discovered, inter alia, the rule relating dipole moments of aromatic compounds and the position of substitution, and the abnormal atomic polarisation of certain molecules. The electron diffraction measurements have thrown light on questions of structure, and especially on the relation between bond length and bond character. |
