Citation | Sutton, Leslie Ernest (Oxford). Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford. Distinguished for his work on molecular structure, especially by the application of electric dipole moments, and interatomic distances measured by electron diffraction. He has also demonstrated the relation between the dipole moments of aromatic compounds and the position of substitution. By these methods he has otrained practical evidence in support of theories of molecular structure derived from the principle of resonance. He has shown that dative bonds are comparatively rare, and has thereby eliminated some long-standing anomalies in inorganic chemistry. He has also shown the cause of abnormally large atom-polarisations, and their relation to intramolecular vibrations. |
