| Citation | Smith, Stanley livingston (Teddington). His discoveries in applied science include a new method of investigating deformation and fatigue of metals by X ray diffraction; new developments of fibre filled synthetic resin for aircraft structures; new light on the stresses induced in gun recoil springs. In addition he has carried out a number of highly important and successful investigations on behalf of the Services most of which are of a secret nature. His published works, though not numerous, cover a wide field of engineering science, ranging from strength of materials to the scientific treatment of heating systems. They show great originality and clarity of treatment. |
